The political director and close advisor to Hungarian Prime Minister Balázs Orbán believes that the newly elected American president Donald Trump should reach out to Kremlin chief Vladimir Putin to establish a communication line with Russia and help facilitate a ceasefire in Ukraine.
He shared this in an interview with Bloomberg during the European Political Community summit in Budapest, as reported by "European Truth".
Orbán is convinced that as soon as the opportunity arises, all communication channels with Russia need to be restored.
Commenting on Trump's statements regarding his ability to "end the war in 24 hours," the advisor to the Hungarian Prime Minister noted that this will likely be a difficult process.
"The peace process is, from a diplomatic standpoint, a very complex issue that must begin, first and foremost, with the restoration of communication channels, and then with discussions about a short-term ceasefire. The sooner we start this, the better it will be for everyone," he believes.
According to him, the Hungarian and American leaders, who have repeatedly boasted about their friendly relations, have already spoken on the phone following Trump's election victory.
It is known that the Hungarian Prime Minister marked this event with a social media post about his and Trump's "great plans", without providing further details.
Balázs Orbán clarified that these plans involve a different approach from Europe regarding Ukraine.
The agency noted that Viktor Orbán has already expressed the idea of revising the approved G7 loan of $50 billion for Ukraine, which was sanctioned despite Hungary's repeated attempts to block it in the EU.
The advisor to the Hungarian Prime Minister predicts that once Trump takes office, the U.S. may reconsider the agreement.
"A different mindset requires different asset management from the American side," he concluded.
It is worth mentioning that after the European Political Community summit, President Vladimir Zelensky stated that he believes Trump wants a quick end to the war, but this could mean losses for Ukraine.
Recently, Trump suggested that he might speak with Putin, while the Russian publication "Verstka" reported that Putin informally congratulated Trump on his presidential election victory, allegedly doing so "through acquaintances".
