For the first time in decades, archaeologists have discovered a 6th-century basilica in Aquileia.

In the ancient Roman city of Aquileia, Italy, archaeologists have unearthed a Byzantine-style Christian basilica. Located in the northeastern part of the country, this historical site has long attracted researchers due to its connections with the Roman Empire, writes Heritage Daily.

Aquileia, founded in 181 BC as a military colony, later played a significant role during the early Christian era, despite enduring devastation from invasions and natural disasters over the centuries.

Recent excavations led by the Austrian Archaeological Institute (ÖAW) have uncovered the remains of the basilica, marking the first major structure excavated in this area after decades of intensive archaeological research. Experts believe that the basilica dates back to the reign of Emperor Justinian I, specifically the first half of the 6th century.

Its design reflects a strong influence from the Eastern Roman Empire, featuring three apses and an orientation towards the southeast, symbolically directing the basilica towards Constantinople and Jerusalem. According to Stefan Gro from ÖAW, similar architectural styles have been found in regions such as Bethlehem, the Lycian coast, and Durres in Albania, indicating Aquileia's connection to the broader Byzantine world.

This discovery underscores Aquileia's role as a cultural and religious center during Justinian's attempts to reclaim Northern Italy from the Arian Goths. Despite this finding, Aquileia remains one of the largest unexcavated Roman cities and holds UNESCO World Heritage status.
