Secrets of America’s ancient civilization: archaeologists have uncovered an unknown pyramid in Peru.

Archaeologists working at the ancient site of Chupasigarro in Peru have uncovered a previously unknown pyramid-like structure buried beneath dense vegetation. This site is located just a kilometer from the sacred city of Caral in the Supe Valley—a region that played a crucial role in the development of early Andean civilization, writes Heritage Daily.

Caral, the most significant settlement of the Norte Chico culture, thrived between the fourth and second millennia BCE. Recognized as one of the oldest urban centers in the Americas, its architectural and urban planning principles influenced later Andean cultures.

Chupasigarro, situated in a small ravine, was part of a network of settlements that facilitated trade and communication between the inland valleys and coastal regions.

Representatives of the Norte Chico culture formed the oldest of pre-Columbian states in the Americas. Scholars first learned of this civilization's existence in the 1990s, following excavations at Caral.

Previous research at Chupasigarro revealed ceremonial structures surrounding a central plaza. The latest excavations led by Dr. Ruth Shaidy in "Sector F" uncovered stone walls forming three platforms. Large stones known as "huancas" were found at the corners of the structure and on the central staircase, a characteristic feature of Caral architecture.

According to the Ministry of Culture of Peru, further analysis of the newly discovered structure will provide deeper insights into the urban planning of Chupasigarro. Researchers also anticipate that these findings will aid in the preservation of the monument and contribute to its integration into cultural tourism initiatives in the region.
