The President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, has urged Europe to make a decision regarding the transfer of approximately 300 billion euros of frozen sovereign Russian assets to assist the Ukrainian people.
“If we genuinely want to effect change, we must decide to transfer those 300 billion euros frozen in Russian assets to Ukraine. I believe that in this case, we would be addressing the issue of supporting Ukraine, which would send a very clear message to Russia, and it would also demonstrate how we can compel Russia to come to the negotiating table,” he stated during the panel discussion “Ukraine: The Road Ahead” at the World Economic Forum in Davos.
As Rinkēvičs pointed out, at this moment “we are not even close to any real discussion of a peace agreement” and “the problem is that Russia is unwilling to sit at the negotiating table.”
