Elderly individuals at risk: researchers have found a dangerous side effect linked to popular pain relievers.

As we age, many medications we take can develop dangerous side effects that are not seen in younger individuals. Recently, researchers identified a similar, potentially lethal effect in common drugs that poses a significant risk to older adults.

A recent Australian study highlights a concerning link between the use of gabapentinoids—medications prescribed for nerve pain and epilepsy—and an increased risk of hip fractures in older adults. According to researchers, many individuals may not even realize they are at risk for severe musculoskeletal injuries, as reported by McKnight’s Long Term Care.

A comprehensive analysis published in the journal JAMA Network Open included data from over 28,000 patients in Victoria, Australia, between 2013 and 2018. The findings revealed that older adults taking these medications are 30% more likely to suffer a hip fracture within 60 days of starting treatment. This data remained significant even when accounting for other medications that affect the central nervous system.

Particularly vulnerable groups included individuals with chronic kidney disease, who faced a 141% higher risk, and frail individuals, where the risk increased by 75%. Demographic data highlighted the increased vulnerability of older women, who made up 71% of the studied population, with 60% being aged 80 and older. The study also indicated that by 2018, gabapentinoids were prescribed to 1 in 7 Australians over 80, reflecting the widespread use of these medications for chronic pain management among the elderly.

Gabapentinoids, often marketed as a safer alternative to opioids, can cause side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, and balance issues, which may potentially elevate the risk of falls in older adults. The growing reliance on gabapentinoids necessitates careful prescribing, especially for those already prone to falls due to frailty or existing conditions like kidney disease, the authors noted.

The issue of hip fractures is widespread: annually, 1 in 25 individuals over 80 suffers from this injury, with 25% dying from related complications within a year. The findings underscore the need for healthcare professionals to thoroughly assess the risks and benefits of prescribing gabapentinoids, particularly in at-risk groups.

Hip fractures represent a significant healthcare challenge globally. The World Health Organization (WHO) has identified fall-related injuries among older adults as a major concern, recommending improved prevention strategies and a review of prescribed medications in such cases. Research conducted in other countries has also pointed to the risks associated with medications that affect overall balance and consciousness.
