A recent study conducted by scientists has revealed a significant impact of physical activity on individuals in the early stages of cancer. Researchers assessed the activity levels prior to diagnosis in 28,248 individuals diagnosed with "early-stage cancer" and found that physical exercise demonstrated a noticeable effect on their well-being, which should not be overlooked when developing new treatment methods for the disease, reports HealthDay.

The findings of the study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine and carried out by Ntokozo Maben and his colleagues from Discovery Vitality in Sandton, South Africa, indicate that regular physical activity considerably reduces risks associated with cancer progression and mortality. The analysis revealed a clear link between physical activity and improved outcomes.

For individuals engaging in physical activity for at least 60 minutes per week, the risk of developing cancer or dying decreased by 27% compared to those who were completely inactive. Similarly, the risk of mortality from all causes in this group dropped by 47%. Even light physical activity, defined as less than 60 minutes per week, showed significant benefits, reducing the risk of cancer progression and death by 16% and 33%, respectively.

The authors of the study emphasize the importance of incorporating physical activity into healthcare recommendations not only as a preventive measure but also as a therapeutic strategy for those already diagnosed. "Healthcare recommendations should encourage people to engage in physical activity not only for cancer prevention but also to reduce the risk of its progression," the researchers stated. They also urge healthcare providers to actively encourage cancer patients to maintain physical activity within their personal limits.

These results align with broader scientific work linking physical activity to a reduced risk of developing various chronic diseases, including cardiovascular issues and diabetes. It is well-known that physical activity also contributes to strengthening mental health by supporting cognitive functions and reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety.

Structured exercise can be an invaluable addition to cancer treatment plans, according to the authors. This is consistent with data from organizations such as the American Cancer Society, which has long advocated for exercise as a means to enhance overall survival among cancer patients.
