A comprehensive study lasting 75 years has enabled scientists to determine how personality traits affect our lifespan, highlighting the accuracy of others' judgments over our own perceptions. Among the findings, researchers identified specific traits that indicate a potential for longer life compared to others, as reported by PsyBlog.
The research, published in the journal Psychological Science, analyzed data from couples who were in their 20s during the 1930s. These couples, on the verge of marriage, underwent personality assessments, supplemented by evaluations from their friends. The key findings indicate that men with conscientious and open personalities tend to live longer, while women benefit from traits such as agreeableness and emotional stability.
Notably, these evaluations were found to be more accurately predicted by friends than by the individuals themselves. Dr. Joshua Jackson, the lead author of the study, explained, “Friends are keen observers of personality traits that can impact lifespan even decades before health issues arise.” The study suggests two reasons for this phenomenon. First, friends may notice behavioral nuances that individuals overlook. Second, the opinions of multiple friends reduce individual bias, creating a more reliable personality profile.
The research also emphasized the importance of contemporary societal shifts, as the personality traits associated with longevity may differ today due to changes in gender roles since the 1930s, when women's roles were more rigid and constrained. Dr. Jackson noted, “Information obtained from friends and observers can serve as a basis for personalized health care approaches, helping to identify individuals at risk for specific diseases.”
Longevity studies often correlate conscientiousness with health-positive behaviors, such as regular exercise and avoidance of risky activities. For instance, according to data gathered by researchers, conscientious individuals are 50% less likely to suffer from cardiovascular diseases.
