In simple terms, a high level of physical activity can help create the necessary calorie deficit: a person consumes fewer calories than they burn, leading to weight loss. However, scientists advise against going to extremes, as our bodies still need fuel, but if we move a lot and eat less, we will, in one way or another, lose those extra pounds.

Research results over the past few decades clearly show that diet plays a key role in weight loss, even more so than exercise. At the same time, it’s important not to forget that physical activity brings many other health benefits beyond just weight loss.

A systematic review of studies published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association actually suggested that relying solely on exercise for weight loss was less effective. The results indicate that following this approach, participants showed only minimal weight loss. Meanwhile, the American College of Sports Medicine found that some people may need up to 60 minutes of exercise a day for weight loss if relying solely on exercise.

In another study, researchers focused on finding the ideal exercise to eliminate excess pounds. The results published in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research show that running on a treadmill burns 25-39% more calories than strength training.

Jumping rope is also considered particularly effective for weight loss, along with rowing machine workouts. Scientists also acknowledge that strength training remains very important and can be a valuable part of an exercise regimen aimed at weight loss.
