Lithuania will propose to Latvia and Estonia the construction of a joint power plant, announced Energy Minister Žygimantas Vaičiūnas on Thursday.

According to "European Truth," the Lithuanian minister's statement was reported by LRT.

He stated that Lithuania aims to build a power plant to ensure flexible electricity production and energy security.

"Ideally, if we reach such an agreement with Latvia and Estonia, it could be a new power plant. In terms of regional projects, we face several challenges in negotiations with regional partners," said Vaičiūnas.

He added that Lithuania is currently "in the process of initiating this issue." The minister did not disclose further details about the potential project.

"I cannot discuss the technology or the location yet, as we need to first hear the opinions of Latvia and Estonia," noted Vaičiūnas.

He also emphasized that since Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia are part of a common energy market, "it would be rational to make such decisions at the regional level."

Recall that in July, the energy ministers of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania confirmed their intentions to synchronize with the continental European energy system ENTSO-E and to disconnect from the Russian system in February 2025.

Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, along with Russia and Belarus, operate within a unified electricity supply system that is centrally managed from Moscow. However, in May 2022, the Baltic countries completely ceased importing electricity from the Russian Federation.
