Fighters of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade named after Rear Admiral Mikhail Bilinsky, while carrying out a combat mission, found themselves surrounded and called artillery fire upon themselves to eliminate as many Russian soldiers as possible and avoid capture.
This was reported by the press service of the Ukrainian Navy.
The marines received orders to advance to the village of Lyubimovka to cover the retreat of their wounded comrades. Upon arriving at the location, Russian forces almost immediately surrounded them, delivering massive strikes with various types of weapons – grenade launchers, machine guns, and even heavy equipment. Nine Ukrainian fighters took defense in an old building where fierce fighting erupted.
The soldiers recount that the situation became increasingly dire: the Russians approached closely, bombarding the house with grenades through the doors and chimney, demanding their surrender. The marines had no intention of giving up.
“No one wanted to surrender, but a collective decision was made - to take the fire [of our artillery] on ourselves to take down more occupiers with us… When our two cluster missiles arrived and everything around us began to explode, regardless of how critical the situation seemed, everyone was relieved that the enemy was hit. The morale lifted, and the fighters were ready to continue the fight,” one of the marines shared.
The powerful artillery strike inflicted serious losses on the Russian troops, and the Ukrainian fighters, having gained a temporary advantage, continued their combat operations.
As they left the destroyed building, the fighters moved in a column across open terrain, under fire from enemy artillery. Those who could wield weapons went ahead, while the wounded supported the column from the rear.
"The marine corps does not surrender. Let them know what kind of guys we are," one of the fighters stated.
