17% of Slovak citizens wish for Russia to win the war against Ukraine.
According to Euractiv, this is evidenced by a survey conducted by the Central European Digital Media Observatory (CEDMO). This percentage is significantly higher than in other countries, such as Poland and the Czech Republic, where only 4% and 7% respectively support the aggressor nation.
The survey indicates that a third of the population in Slovakia supports the idea of a temporary ceasefire with no clear victor, while another portion desires a victory for Ukraine.
"CEDMO data shows that the desire for a Russian victory is stronger among individuals in Slovakia aged 65 and older – 24%. Conversely, over half of Slovaks aged 16-24 wish for a Ukrainian victory," the article states.
Experts link this support for Russia in Slovakia to the influence of disinformation that is actively spreading in the country. In particular, some politicians have repeatedly claimed that Western sanctions against the Russian Federation are ineffective, and that Ukraine has ceased gas supplies to Slovakia, leading to a sharp rise in energy prices. Additionally, videos circulated among Slovaks depicting a drunken Ukrainian president, as well as narratives portraying the fascist nature of the Ukrainian state, allegedly repressing Russian-speaking citizens.
